Ritherdon & Co and R O Electrical have put together an innovative temporary traffic light system which, if required, can replicate exactly the permanent signals it is replacing at a junction.
This will bring huge improvements in safety and congestion during signals installation and any other civil works near busy junctions.
The refurbishment of many outstanding junctions is now a safe and practical task.
The Problem

Conventional temporary/portable traffic signals lacked many of the important features of permanent traffic signals and could not provide the service that is sometimes required on more complex works.
The Solution
A Protective Extra Low Voltage (48 V) system, using standard controller hardware to take over the smooth operation of junctions during major works.
As standard controllers are used, this system can reproduce as much of the existing system as is required during the road works, with the following features and benefits.
Total functionality possible, including:
· multi-traffic phasing and control,
· vehicle detection,
· full pedestrian phasing and control,
· pedestrian detection,
· remote monitoring from the local authority UTC.
Avoiding jams/gridlock
· eliminates complaints from road users,
· maintains access for emergency vehicles,
· reduces pollution,
· benefits the local economy,
· permits critical work to continue right through the Christmas shopping period.
Safety
· pedestrian crossings possible,
· low voltage safer (e.g. in case of RTAs),
· secure fixing of equipment (bolted down).
Practicalities
· install with old (even collapsed) ducting and switch on before new duct work starts.
· permanent power supply more reliable than batteries.
· reduced vandalism
- look more like permanent signals, so less tempting.
- less traffic congestion = less frustration.
