Gas Meter Box Repair

External gas meters on domestic properties are usually installed in glass reinforced plastic (GRP) enclosures. However, plastic meter boxes are susceptible to damage from vandalism, the wind catching loose doors and from general wear and tear.

Designed to repair a damaged meter box in minutes, covering all the accessible GRP with powder-coated steel (most units are actually stainless steel) and without the need to disconnect the gas supply or meter, the Ritherdon Door and Frame units provide a cost effective and very durable solution to this problem.

You can follow this link to the production selection table which helps you choose the correct door and frame unit to repair your model of gas meter box.

R18G Replacement Gas Door and Frame

The replacement gas door R18G is made to repair one of the most common semi-flush gas meter boxes.  It is one of a matching pair of Ritherdon door and frame units designed to repair damaged gas meter box installation (see the R18E for its identical twin – minus the ventilation louvres).

The unit is fabricated from commercial grade stainless steel and finished with highly protective white powder paint. Supplied with all fixings and plastic key.

The gas meter enclosure on many properties are part of a matching pair. Repairing the Hepworth meter box with an R28 replacement gas door unit maintains the consistency and leaves the outside of the house looking much smarter with about 20-30 minutes work in total.

The unit is fabricated from commercial grade stainless steel and finished with highly protective white powder paint. Supplied with all fixings and plastic key. The electric version can be found here.

R10G Replacement Gas Door and Frame

The R10G range is a front (external) fixing unit and is used mainly when the GRP gas meter box is damaged but is still firmly attached to the wall. It is installed by drilling through the four holes in the front and secured using the four special anti-vandal expansion screws provided.

No need to drill inside damaged GRP box – installation safer in unskilled hands. The units are fabricated from commercial grade corrosion-resistant stainless steel, and powder coated white to give a durable protective finish.  The difference between the R10G and R10E range is that the R10Gs have the required ventilation louvres and the gas warning symbol punched into their doors.

R22 Gas Meter Housing

The Ritherdon R22 Replacement Gas Meter Housing is designed to replace an existing GRP Gas Meter Housing that has been damaged but the Standard GRP Gas meter Backplate is intact, or where there is a need to protect the unit from vandal attack.

The units are fabricated from corrosion resistant, commercial grade stainless steel, and are finished in white using the latest powder coating techniques for extra durability.

The R22 fits onto the backplate in the same manner as the original GRP Housing, by hooking the top over the backplate at the wall, and the new integrated spring bracket locks the unit in place. For extra security, there are two holes in the base which allow the unit to be screwed to the backplate.

R24 for Semi Concealed Gas Boxes

Floor mounted (aka semi-concealed or semi-buried or ground meter box) gas meter boxes are particularly susceptible to damage as they can be stepped on or have things dropped on them. Also the sharp edges of a broken GRP box at ground level are a hazard.

Previously Ritherdons only manufactured and supplied replacement lids for this type of gas meter box. However, we now have three options for repairing them:

  1. Replacement lids – the R24M and R24H lids for repairing Mitras boxes and Hepworth boxes respectively.
  2. Replacement lid and frame units if the damage is too great simply to replace the lid and, again, there are units for Mitras and Hepworth boxes.
  3. *Replacement lid and body units for pre-payment meter boxes (see the case study about how we designed this product with Langstane housing).

See How to Repair a Meter Box for an instructional video on repairing a semi-concealed gas meter box with an R24 unit.

Like the rest of the Ritherdon range, the R24 units greatly increase the longevity and security of the GRP meter box that they repair. The R24 units are also powder coated brown (note the colour rendition in the photos isn’t perfect), so that they match the plastic boxes.

As with the rest of the range, fitting the R24s is very easy. An R24 lid fits the meter box in the same way as the original plastic lid and the lid and frame units fasten through the plastic box with a screw and nut. All the necessary fittings are supplied with the units.
